Mngqithi Critical Of Hunt Sacking
Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has criticised Kaizer Chiefs for sacking Gavin Hunt.
The four-time Premier Soccer League champion was fired by Amakhosi last month, with interim coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard leading the team to two wins in their final two DStv Premiership games.
On Wednesday, Stuart Baxter was unveiled as new permanent Chiefs coach, after agreeing to a two-year deal with an option for another two years.
Mngqithi was asked about the coaching changes at Naturena and feels Hunt deserved more time after leading the club into their first ever semi-final of the CAF Champions League.
“All I want to say is Gavin Hunt achieved something that Chiefs has never achieved before (reaching the semi-final) and he is now out of his job,” he said as per Kick Off.
“It is the story of our football. We change because we are emotional at times. Gavin Hunt has won four (league) trophies.
“You can’t say you didn’t know the type of football he plays – he plays a certain type of football and he wins trophies with that type of football, stick with it.
“But if suddenly you say ‘No, no, we are not happy with the style of football,’ then why did you bring this coach in the first place?
“Because you could not change him from what he has been doing over the years.
“And worse, he could not even sign the players he wants, to play the type of football that he wants, so for me the less said the better.”
Baxter won four trophies during his first spell at Chiefs between 2012 and 2015 but it remains to be seen whether he can once again add silverware to the club’s trophy cabinet.
