Former Mamelodi Sundowns winger Keletso Makgalwa as well as Joseph Mhlongo and Bonginkosi Makume have been unveiled as new signings by Motsepe Foundation Championship newbies Upington City.
Makgalwa, 26, was seen as a super-sub under coach Pitso Mosimane because of his impact from the bench, and even won the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player in 2019/20.
But he was loaned out to All Stars last season, and when he came back he was training with other players who were deemed surplus to requirement by coach Rulani Mokwena.
The winger was also on loan at Swallows in the 2021/22 season, where he was with Mhlongo at the Dube Birds under Brandon Truter.
Mhlongo knows the Motsepe Foundation Championship well in his career, having helped Polokwane City last season to gain promotion but he was told to pack his bags and leave the club during the off season.
The 33-year-old has previously played in the second tier for Roses, and FC Cape Town, but is perhaps best known for his time at Black Leopards and at Swallows.
Makume has been signed as a free agent after he was informed by Maritzburg United management that they were not going to keep him in the Motsepe Foundation Championship this season after the club was relegated from the top flight last term.
It was the second time in the consecutive season that Makume was part of a club that was relegated after he experienced the same heartache with Baroka FC in the 2021/22 season.
He featured in 29 matches in all competitions last season for Maritzburg, including four matches in the PSL play-offs where the Team of Choice’ status was sealed after they failed to beat Cape Town Spurs in the last game.
That form saw him called-up by stand-in coach Morena Ramoreboli to the Bafana Bafana B-side in the COSAFA Cup in Durban, where they won the bronze medal, beating Malawi on penalty shootouts.
The trio of players joined Thabo Nkosi’s Upington, who are lying 13th on the MFC table with six points after seven matches. They are without a win in the last five matches.
