Rama Opens Up On Hunt Sacking
Kaizer Chiefs’ Ramahlwe Mphahlele has opened up on the sacking of Gavin Hunt, saying he hopes the “old dog” will return to PSL football soon.
The 31-year-old spoke to iDiski Times senior writer Velile Mnyandu at the recent Vodacom-organised food drive which had Chiefs and Orlando Pirates players packing food parcels as the cell phone company had donated R5 000 per goal scored by the Amakhosi and Buccaneers in this past campaign.
Rama insisted that Hunt was unfortunate to be sacked and compared his situation to Frank Lampard’s dismissal at Chelsea before Thomas Tuchel took over and lead the club to the 2020/21 UEFA Champions League title.
“If there is one guy that you know he’s gonna bounce back it’s Gavin. He is an old dog in this game, very experienced and like I said it was unfortunate that we lost him, but again football is results orientated.
“Coaches don’t have much time, unfortunately like us players, but I haven’t doubted his abilities as a coach because the pedigree speaks for itself. I mean the guy won leagues, cups you know, he is a very, very good coach, so I hope and pray that he comes back to football because we need coaches like him in the PSL (Premier Soccer League) so the league grows stronger.
“Again you don’t get to the Champions League semi-final if you are a bad coach, so it’s just one of those things. He brought us to where we are today so we are very thankful.
“I compared his situation to Frank Lampard at Chelsea because it’s like you take a team, you put it here and then they fire you and Chelsea won the Champions League, but Thomas (Tuchel) said thanks to Lampard for putting the team where it was.
“So we thank him for making history, you know the first time the club actually qualified for Champions League semi-finals, so like I said it wasn’t all bad.”
Chiefs will face Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the away leg of their CAF Champions League semi-final on Saturday before hosting them in South Africa a week later.
However, Mphahlele is one of four Amakhosi stars who are sidelined with injuries.
