SuperSport United head coach Kaitano Tembo was pleased with his team’s second half performance as they beat Baroka 2-0 in the DStv Premiership on Saturday, and especially goalscorer Gamphani Lungu’s impact.
Lungu came off the bench to score a brace for Tembo’s side, who are now just one point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who however do have a game in hand.
Tembo says they weren’t at their best in the first half, but managed to turn around in the second 45 for a deserved victory.
“Look I think apart from the two chances that we created in the first half, which we were not ready, in my own opinion, that’s why we didn’t take them because we were second to the ball,” Tembo told the club’s media department.
“And we knew that they will try and play that long ball to Evidence, and then they play on the second ball, and we didn’t gather the second ball like we had planned and that gave them an advantage in terms of dominance.
“They created I think one good chance, but then Ronwen made a good save them in the first half, so I was not quite happy with a with the performance in the first half.
“But second half I think we regrouped, we corrected our mistakes, we wanted to get behind them, especially on the left side, which was our right side, to try and get behind Denwin (Farmer), because he’s naturally a centre back, and that’s why we brought in Gamphani Lungu and then he did that.
“That’s how we created our opportunities and we took them very well, Jones took his two chances very well.
“Sometimes in a game like this you have to really dig deep, you’ve got to really work hard, because they’re a very good team, well structured, they are very good at what they do, so you’ve got to try and match them in terms of their work ethic and I think we did that second half, I was quite happy with the performance.”
Tembo had special praise for Lungu, after his impact.
“Ja, and I think he’s been working very hard, especially during the FIFA break, we worked hard on him,” he continued.
“If you look at our bench it was only him and Gabuza, the two out and out strikers, so we needed try and manage that to have a little bit something coming off the bench, and I’m quite happy, he deserved the goals which he scored, because he took them very well and he’s been working very hard, that’s why I’m happy and it will do a lot of confidence in him going forward.”
